Poll

If you were training for a marathon (let's just say the Boston Marathon) and you were supposed to get a 20 mile training run in and it was power snowing like 25 inches and there was not way you could run outside, what would you do?

a) Run it on a treadmill
b) Run 71 laps around a 450 meter indoor track
c) Say f*ck it and watch MTV reality TV, such as My Super Sweet Sixteen

Thoughts?

I'd opt for the 71 laps over the "dreadmill", although I'd do half of the 71 clockwise and the other half counter-clockwise. Many people who run on a track make the big mistake of doing all laps in the same direction, which the curves put unnecessary stress on the inward plant leg.

I vote c. Besides the weather may be better the next day;)

Oh, my aching inward plant leg!!

Runnerblogger- Did you not switch directions on your circle run?

Katie- I would opt for C too... although these Super Sweet Sixteen girls are soooo bratty! (I am jealous)

Soles- what about running backwards?

I would go for (c) as well, but I would probably do 5 miles on the indoor track as well just to counter-act the wine I would be drinking while doing (c)!

Thanks for the tip faithful soles, now I know why I have one leg longer then the other!

Catwoman- it is not too late to undo the effects! Get out there and lengthen that leg!

I would take off my shirt and go run 25 in the snow. Running in shitty weather makes you tough!

You could always do A and C at the same time and enjoy a glass of wine when you are finished.

Since I assume that I am the hypothetical runner in question, allow me to respond. No, there is only one direction to run on the track, and that is counter-clockwise. I think they do this because we are running around a speed-skating oval, and the skaters do not want to be skating in the opposite direction as a bunch of whacky runners. This isn't some sissy-ass health club with a 28-meter indoor track.

As far as taking my shirt off and running the snow, I do agree that running in bad weather toughens you up, but you have to have limits to what conditions are beyond "toughening" and pass into the realm of "insanity". Mine are as follows:

1) It can't be under 20 degrees
2) The wind can't be more than 20 mph
3) There can't be ice on the road

Unforunately, we have had one or more (usually all three) of these conditions in Wisconsin for the past month. I don't mind running during snow; it's the ice and cold. Does that make me a wuss?

For the record, I would probably do all 3- kinda like a triathlon of sorts. Run one mile on the track, one on the treadmill, and watch 8 hours of reality TV.

Cross training is such a beautiful thing!
